I began making cityscape drawings out of a desire to look at and examine examples of representation and abstraction.  I thought that buildings of the city could provide the representational framework while the clouds could be used to present a form of abstraction.  Together though what is depicted is ultimately a representational scene that’s abstracted because the objects and shapes are where they should be in this genre (cityscape).   Although not my intention initially there are also references to the notion of the sublime as posited in 17th century landscape painting because of the movement of the clouds and or shapes above. I made these cityscape drawings over a period of at least 10 years including a series of facade drawings. Initially all of the drawings were untitled and numbered and where as large as 72” x 42”. All are not documented in this current group.
