I make paintings that are expressionistic based using loosely applied paint.. Color is very important, but the overall feel and presence of the image is what gives it power. While in art school I was struck by the work of Emil Nolde, the German Expressionism, and any form of art that focused on inner feelings. In that regard African Sculpture became just as important not only because of it’s power to convey emotion but also because German Expressionism, the Blue Rider Group, Cubism and almost any other ism had been influence by African Sculpture and other non-Eurocentric forms.

My paintings just like my drawings are comprised of part photographic reference, part imagination and part invention/improvisation. I like the immediacy of acrylic and constantly build up the surface through successive layering to a finish that’s on the picture plane as much as it is in it. The images included in this gallery represent work over the last several years that is ongoing.
